Prof Charles Uwadia, President/Chairman-in-Council, Computer Professionals (Registration Council of Nigeria) CPN has warned ICT professionals who are practicing without registering with the council that they would be considered as quacks and will be penalized according to the law of the land.
He gave this warning at the CPN media executive forum held on Tuesday, in Lagos.
Prof Uwadia stated that CPN was mandated by law to regulate, control and supervise all computing profession and practice in the country, therefore any professional in the industry that is practicing without registering with the council will be considered as quack and penalized according to the law.
He noted that the Act that established the council mandated it to determine the standards of knowledge and skills to be attained by persons seeking to become members of the computing profession and improve those standards from time to time as circumstances may permit.
He added that the Act mandated them to periodically publish list of registered members of the council and anybody whose name is not on their register is considered as a quack.
He explained that the council’s desire is to have as many registered professionals as possible, while noting also that there are a lot of benefits that would be derived from being a registered member of the council.
According to him, “We are mandated to regularly publish list of licensed members of the council and anybody whose name is not in our register is considered as a quack.
“Implementation of the law is very important in this country and as for us in the council; we desire to have as many registered professionals as possible.
“Anybody that is part of us will derive the benefit that’s accrued to every member of the council.
“And anybody that is not part of us and he or she is practicing is going against the law of the land and should be penalized accordingly.”
Prof Uwadia called on the media to partner with them in raising awareness on the need for practitioners to register with the council through their reportage.
Earlier, Allwell Achumba, Registrar/Secretary, Computer Professionals (Registration Council of Nigeria) CPN said the forum which is in its second year was organized to foster a mutually beneficial relationship between the media and council.
He thanked the media for a robust and beautiful working relationship that had existed between them.
He noted that the media is critical in highlighting the importance of professionalism in the information technology sector in the country.
The council used the event to unfold plans for their forthcoming 2019 IT Assembly summit billed to hold from Wednesday 26th – Thursday 27th of June, at NICON Luxury Hotel, Abuja.
Giving an insight on the event, kole Jagun, Vice-President/Vice Chairman-in-council, Computer Professionals (Registration Council of Nigeria) CPN, said that the upcoming event will avail individual and corporate organizations that are involved in IT practice as well as the general public the much needed education on the existence of the council.
He added that the Assembly will provide a national discussion on the emerging issues in the IT sectors as well as generate recommendations and decisions that will impart positively on the industry and the nation in general.
To lead discussions at the event are Prof Yemi Osinbajo, Vice President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Prof Charles Ayo, Former Vice- Chancellor, Covenant University, Engr Chidi Nwafor, Director, IT, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)
