Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) has asked the Federal Government, through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to take steps to stop the free fall of Naira in the exchange market.
Speaking at the opening of the first session of 2015 Mandatory Continuing Professional Development in Ado Ekiti, Alh. Sakirudeen Labode, National President of the association, attributed the Naira’s fall to the slide in oil prices.
He said: “the country should look inwards and pay more attention to other key sectors of the economy for the much needed foreign exchange. The solid minerals and agriculture come to mind here.
“We had over the years paid lip services to the development of these sectors. There can be no time to exploit these key sectors than now.”
Labode said the MCPD and other training programmes of the association served as avenues to improve the skills of members to face the challenges caused by changing trends in the profession and to revalidate membership among others.
He warned that members who fail to attend at least one MCPD programme in a year would face sanctions.
The ANAN boss urged members to update themselves on International Financial Reporting Standards and International Public Sector Accounting Standards, adding that the association had put in place training programmes for them to learn rudiments of new porting standards.
Ayodele Fayose, Ekiti State governor, who declared the event open, said his government would continue to appoint qualified members to ensure effective implementation of the six cardinal agenda of his administration.
Fayose, who was represented by his deputy, Dr. Kolapo Olusola, said “There is no way we will employ accountant that will be using 20th century techniques to work in the 21st century.”
